The rhodium plating is used to make white gold engagement rings more durable and scratch resistant. This plating can wear over time and will need to be refinished, but it is not hard and it is not expensive. Because of the rhodium plating, white gold engagement rings are actually shinier than platinum engagement rings, and a lot of times it is the shine and sparkle factor that women are going for.
